Description:
Alongside the Management and Spatial Planning of the Protected Landscape of Monte da Guia, it has been planned the recovery, requalification and reorganization of the different existing constructions - Centro do Mar (Sea Center), Casa dos Dabney (Dabney House) and annexes, and Old Factory of the Whale as well as all the surrounding area.

According to the preliminary study presented, we propose that the Old Factory of the Whale be adapted to a virtual aquarium.

In this global study presentation, the building no longer is a terminal of the pedestrian route so that it can assume the transition of the space constructed more by the shore, becoming a more natural and more interior space.

This quadrangular building, in tuft, planted on the coast, may have been originally intended to be a cod factory (together with two more buildings from which is uniquely visible a corner in stone), or constructed for the Factory of the Whale in the same location as the original building.

Abandoned its use because of the appearance of a new structure, current Centro do Mar, the building came into ruin, having had temporarily other functions notwithstanding, from which it stands out, more recently, a discotheque.

Culmination of the group constructed; it houses an attractive and innovative program that will motivate a trip to the four hydrothermal fountains at the bottom of the sea that surround the archipelago of the Azores.

The initially towed building presents nowadays the texture of the structural construction material, tufted masonry, which allows it to mingle with the surrounding landscape.

Without altering this current vision, we propose the construction of a new building within the existent, emerging through the top, given that the height is totally different from the previous construction, and "varnishing" the current walls in order to the defend them from the aggression of the weather. This proposal of intervention, maintaining an image of almost ruin, is completed through the walling up of the windows with stone replacing the existent blocks.

The almost closed building attempts to construct a proper environment to the visioning of the bottom of the ocean, through the circular shape of the screens and the enfolder in closets, aquariums or screens in blue color total.

Organized in a very simple way, with and entrance and an exit, it includes a small sanitarium installation in the thickness of the closet and of the inter-space of a window.
